The Quantitative Research

This is the research I have been promoting lately. 35 people have now responded - I have no idea yet what will emerge - maybe nothing in which case what will I talk about in 3 weeks time!
I need more questionnaires really - so where are you all!! Well they are still coming in.

One thing that has emerged is the level of sexual abuse - for many this is perpetrated by other brethren and for many this has occurred when the person was under 18 years of age. I want to challenge the brethren - what have they done about it, what are they going to do about it. I dont know what the statistics are for the general population - if anyone knows please let me know as I would like to know if the rates in my sample are more or less than in the general population. One problem is - how do you define sexual abuse.

It's not so easy this stuff!

Hi Jill.

As i already found out they honestly care little about it.Its considdered just a tough luck situation.Mostly seems its that way to me too now.

Not quite sure what you mean by needing more questionnaires. If its that you want more people involved in the research you are doing, im willing to take part if it helps. Some memories i find i prefer to try bury but i suppose that dont realy help any others with bringing about change.I see no email showing how to contact you though.

Hello Anonymous
Sorry I wasn't clear!! Yes I mean I want more people to get involved in the research I am currently doing. It involved filling out some questionnaires. You can contact me on this email address - brethrenresearch@googlemail.com

Many thanks
Jill

There is a convenient table summarizing the prevalence of sexual abuse at
http://www.nspcc.org.uk/Inform/research/briefings/prevalencetable1_wdf49715.pdf

To find the definitions used you need to see
http://www.nspcc.org.uk/Inform/research/Briefings/prevalenceandincidenceofchildabuse_wda48217.html

All the prevalence figures in the table are well below the prevalence in my modest circle of ex-Brethren friends. If my friends are a representative sample (which is not at all certain) then an Exclusive Brethren upbringing would appear to be associated with an increased risk of sexual abuse.

The authoritarian and patriarchal structure of their society may predispose to this problem in the same way as it did in the Roman Catholic Church.

There is not much point in challenging the(Brethren) abusers, mine are all dead now- God will Judge them and if they were really Christians they will be in heaven and if they weren't then as all good Brethren kids, we know they are in hell.

I take the attitude that they wrecked my childhood and beyond but I am surely not going to let them steal my adulthood from me and make it a misery! I am free, the truth has made me free.

Hi Cobber
That's a good attitude to have but it does not work for everyone. I am not sure I agree with you though when you say there is not much point in challenging the abusers - if no one challenges them they will just go on abusing the children still in the group. I am sure none of us would want that to go on?
